Location
I photograph on location, usually outdoors, on the beautiful island of Oahu. Let me know if you want help deciding on a location. I have lots of ideas. Think about the colors, the mood, the background of the photographs you want to create. Do you want a beach scene, garden, mountains, field, etc? Early mornings or evenings are the best time to find nice, creamy lighting, especially at the beach where shade is limited. There are so many great areas for your photo session from the state parks & beaches to your own back yard and many obscure places in between. Below are some of the places I enjoy on the Windward (East) side of Oahu.

Kailua Beach – Fun atmosphere with kiteboarders, outrigger canoes and kayaks in the background. There are sand dunes to jump off, a bridge over the canal & some grassy areas in front of the beach.

Lanikai Beach – Crystal blue water, white sand beach, Mokulua islands in the background, lookout point over Kailua Beach, lava rocks near boat ramp. This is a more private beach with less people & many options.

Kalama Beach – View of Lanikai lslands and Kaneohe, nice trees and grass area. This beach is fun and dynamic, but sometimes windy.

Ho’omaluhia Botanical Gardens in Kaneohe- Lush suroundings, green grass, ducks, pond, large grass areas with lots of space to run and play. Great view of the Ko’olau Mountains in the distance too.

Haiku Gardens in Kaneohe- Tropical plants and flowers, gazebo, lake, pathway lined with trees, mini palm trees, grass, lots of shade.

Wardrobe!
Wardrobe can be an important element to your session. These are some suggestions and ideas to get you started on what to wear. You can also look through the website for inspiration or check out my ‘What to Wear’ section.

*Layers -Camis, under shirts, scarves, shirts with cute sweaters, etc. Layers are good because it adds visual interest to your wardrobe.
*Vibrant Colors -Pair fun bright tops with jeans, or a pop of color with a scarf. White is great too. There is no wrong color, but do look for things that flatter your skin tone, and hair color.
*Texture -If you like wearing neutral colors, or lots of black, I suggest bringing things to layer, or wearing things with texture to create a nice dynamic in your wardrobe.
*Accessories -Funky jewelry, cute necklaces, fun rings, and hats. Belts are nice touches to jeans, or you can create a good silhouette with a dress or a loose, flowy top.
*Dresses -Cute dresses, prom dresses, dresses with heels, dresses with converse. I love dresses!
*Skirts & Shorts -Skirts and shorts are fun almost all year round here in Hawaii!
*Props -Props can also provide a fun setting for the photo shoot and keep your child (or you) entertained.

People are often more relaxed in front of a camera when they have something to do or hold in their hands like a flower, balloon, a favorite toy, bubbles, umbrella, surfboard, instrument, etc. What will make you feel the most comfortable in front of the camera?
